Think your state gets cold? You might be surprised by just how low temperatures have dropped across the country. From below-zero temperatures in Florida to an unbelievable -80°F in Alaska, every state has its own extreme cold weather history.

![Coldest Temps by State](/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcms-assets-con.cdn.weatherbug.net%2Fassets%2Fcontentitems%2Fdc%2Fdc42836e-3e9e-4114-b45f-84d6591f2d29%2F52e0ce98-d40a-4283-82d1-d0fe816ebf4b%2F9b30230b-6a01-4f12-b12b-1161fe321359.png&w=3840&q=75)

## Even Warm States Have Seen Extreme Cold

Florida might be known for sunshine and warm weather, but Tallahassee dropped to -2°F on February 13, 1899, setting the state's all-time record low.

Even Hawaii isn't immune to the cold! The Aloha State has recorded a temperature of 12°F near the summit of Mauna Kea.

Some records aren't as old as you might think. Illinois set its all-time low of -38°F in January 2019, while Maine reached -50°F in January 2009.

## The 10 Coldest State Temperature Records

When it comes to extreme cold, Alaska takes the top spot. But several states in the Lower 48 have experienced some incredibly low temperatures, too.

Montana holds the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in the contiguous United States, reaching -70°F at Rogers Pass in January 1954\. But Alaska takes the crown. On January 23, 1971, temperatures at Prospect Creek dropped to a staggering -80°F, the coldest officially recorded temperature in U.S. history.
